Tambon Ban Chiang Cultural Tourism Community Udon Thani

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY

Those who interested in Southeast Asian archaeology may well have heard of the famous Ban Chiang pottery found in the northeastern region of Thailand. These ancient artifacts date back almost 5,000 years old, and their outstanding international importance has eventually led to UNESCO recognizing Ban Chiang as a World Heritage Site in 1992.

For visitors new to the region, the best collection on display can be found at Ban Chiang National Museum, which aims to help develop the younger generation’s interest in historical study. However, the present community does not wish the site to be recognized as just another archaeological ground; instead, they want to continue this heritage and turn it into unique (newly-made) community products that visitors can actually take home as souvenirs. As a result, courses on pottery making and decorating are available in the area for all abilities. Other handicrafts that incorporate distinct Ban Chiang styles, such as cotton weaving, indigo dying and basketry, are also taught. An impressive attraction to check out in the community is the flamboyant Thai Puan dance.

CULTURAL AND LOCAL WISDOM HERITAGE

  1. Pottery Ban Chiang’s pottery industry is a distinct part of this community’s heritage, with the material being used to create many different types of products. An archaeological site and a museum have both been founded for visitors to learn more about the region’s fascinating past, while workshops are also available at Ban Chiang Pottery and Painting Group. This group was formed by community members who produce pottery featuring ancient designs – which make excellent souvenirs.
Traditional clothes made of indigo-dyed cotton This began with locals who produced indigo-dyed hand-woven clothes for their own use. They became popular thanks to the unique look and are now the village’s most widely-recognized OTOP (local product).
Basketry Basketry was once a popular traditional job for Isan people in the Northeast of Thailand. In Ban Chiang, basketry products are further developed with unique styles, which set them apart from those of other regions. The designs are intricate and well-combined with the Tai Puan art style.
Tai Puan traditional dance The Tai Puan traditional dance was first introduced by the Tai Puan people who migrated to Ban Chiang many years ago. The dance features flamboyant and unique moves all performed in harmony.
Ban Chiang National Museum Ban Chiang National Museum was founded by the Fine Arts Department to educate people about the importance of the pre-historic culture and history of Ban Chiang.
